    Aion

Does anybody know if it's still possible to try Aion for free, and how to do it? It sounds like it's pretty pvp-centric, so I doubt I'd really be into it, but I'd like to poke around just to try it out.

Got Windows running in VMWare Fusion so just need to download and get started.

I bought Aion to see if it was any good, but I didn't like it so quit like 2 weeks in, there is no trial for Aion atm, but I can check if my account still has time left and give you the info if you really want to try it.

So far, I've yet to come across any pvp but I'm only level 20. It's a good looking game; I like the flying element to it. The crafting system is also pretty complexas you cancreate more powerful items, etc, based on your successful crafting attempts (and procs).

I might be able to 'recruit a friend'. I'll look into it.

It is SOOO fun! I have a level 28 Spiritmaster, which is basically a ripoff of a warlock, but the PVP is amazing. You don't really get into the PVP until level 25, when you can enter the Abyss, which is basically the in-between area of the two races. Roofles has a guild (they're called legions) over there that Syt and I are in, and it's name is "Citizen" :P because that's what the NPC's are named.

You'll play for maybe another 2 weeks and then be back to WoW.

I got it running on VMWare Fusion but too slow so I'm going to re-install using Boot Camp.

    What servers/factions are people?

Syt, me, and Roofles are on Siel, and we're Asmodians, but I think character creation is locked on that server :[

Still haven't really played 'cause it's too slow under Fusion and don't have Boot Camp running yet, but I will say that I'm extremely turned off by a piece of software that starts up my browser and goes to their home page whenever I quit the game. How obnoxious is that?

You can turn that off under the Options menu.

    Re: Aion

Ok, my initial impressions of Aion:
    • When interacting with NPCs or dealing with things like inventory and character profile there is WAY too much clicking. Really bad UI design in areas that should be pretty simple. Lots of targeting little tiny things with the mouse. Multiple options to accomplish the same thing (e.g., after you accept a quest you can click the final line of text, click the "close" button, or just click the "x" in the corner of the window. All of them do the same thing, but it's not obvious this is true.
    • In general I like WoW's "cartoon" like graphics more than the ones that try to be more photorealistic. In my opinion the photorealism ends up looking worse because it's fake-ness is more obvious. Also, I tend to have a harder time distinguishing depth or picking out features with Aion-like graphics.
    • Combat feels less fluid than WoW, but that may just be that I'm used to WoW. Still (to make a car comparison) WoW feels more like driving a stick, and Aion feels more like an automatic transmission. Somehow whacking mobs (at least at low level) just isn't as satisfying.
    • I really like the "Private Store" feature of Aion. In fact I've been envisioning/wishing for something like it for WoW. Basically if you have items you want to sell to other players you can put them in your private store and give them a price. Whenever you're afk you can turn your store on, and you basically sit there with a sign out. Passing players can click on you and look at your store, and if they want to buy something they can do so without you having to come back to the keyboard.
    • Dialog is REALLY corny/lame. Worse than wow.
    • Gold spammers are out of control
The main reason to play Aion, in my opinion, is simply to try something new, and maybe explore some new zones. Certainly I haven't yet had an epiphany that "this is what WoW has been missing" or anything.

    Looking forward to Diablo III.

    Re: Aion

still playing, dyanae and i hit 31yesterday, and i hear ya neckface on the photo-realism shit, that's what I've been feeling but didn't know how to put it into words.

and for those curious as to how the game play works fighting is like playing a ret paladin and rogue put together, its on a cool down system, every skill has one except heals, the 2nd factor to the skills is the chain system, once you use a skill, a 2nd skill becomes available for use but only because you used the previous one. as you level, you gain more skills and chains and auto attacking becomes a rarity. also everyone uses mana, no rage or energy involved.

    other points:
    •  There isn't a fluid quest line you can follow, i spend half my time grinding mobs for experience simply due to a lack of quests, but there are campaign quests and optional quests
    •  Pvp has ALOT of quirks to work out, nearly all instant attacks actually have some sort of 1-2 second cast animation (ie. ranger stunning shot: he pulls back his bow string really far before letting the arrow fly) this animation also forces the player to stay put while preforming the attack, only auto attacks can be used on the run. making kiting and chasing someone both a pain in the ass.
    • once you choose a role, you're stuck with it, Templars are the tanks, Clerics are the healers. Period... Chanters can offheal decently, and Gladiators and Chanters can tank if necessary, but all in all, your role is basically set in stone. there aren't talent points, instead they have a glyph system which grant you a skill instead of a buffing a current skill.

as one of our legion members pointed out, aion is a clusterfuck of alot of mmorpgs, NCsoft created guild wars and city of heroes, so they took those and had a baby with WoW and named it Aion. there are alot of things that need to be fixed, Gold spammers are one that they've recently resolved to an extent. it just reminds me of the first year of wow, except the game play as a whole is going to need a change if they expect me to keep playing once cataclysm hits the shelves.

So far I'm enjoying myself, its a new game and its challenging, i play a chanter, the paladin of Aion, they can do decent 2handed dps and are great back up healers, though not as powerful as clerics. they are the "buff class" they provide 2 buffs that clerics can, but also have an arsenal of auras that can be pretty powerful and are required as instances get harder.
