Shimegi - 80 Affliction Warlock - application for upgrade from Homie to Bench

Who Am I: Neil.  I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  I'm a pilot flying Piper Navajos for CargoJet based out of Halifax servicing major points throughout the Atlantic provinces.  My schedule is mostly Tuesday and Thursday from 4am AEST to 9pm AEST. In server talk that's 12am server to 5pm server. My raiding 'black spots' are Mon and Wed evenings, due to my early starts in the morning.

Hardware/Internet: I have a Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz comp with 2 gb RAM. I also have a toshiba satellite notebook in case things head south with my desktop. My connection is 54 Mbps high speed wireless internet through Eastlink.

    Armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bonechewer&n=Shimegi

Spec: Currently 55/0/16 for raiding.  I've been learning a lot since running with Civ and welcome any feedback to squeeze more DPS out. I've also recently dual specced and am curious to see if destro works better for me or not.

Professions: I'm a tailor and enchanter (443 and 431 respectively). One for me and one for you is how I look at it. As a few of you already know, I'm never too busy to meet up and enchant gear for you.It works for both of us

Guild/Raiding History: Since joining up with Civ in January, I've got a dose of how a good guild is run. I'm impressed with the quality of players, the leadership they're getting, and the reputation the guild has with others. As far as raiding history goes; pretty much everything except Ulduar, which I've run only once with a PuG. We went as far as XT-002 before people started leaving. I've researched the fights.

My Alts: Icarrus, 80 holy pally

Why I Am Applying to Civilian: In this case, it's 'why am I reapplying?' Over the past few months I've realised I can offer the guild more of my time and would like to be more involved in raiding and guild runs. Gurruk has mentioned several times to me that nobody knows me that well and that's something I'd like to change. Basically I have more to offer the guild and I'm here to up my game.

Why Civilian Should Want Me: I like to think I'm a valuable member of a team or raid. I don't bring stress to the table, I strive to put out the most DPS possible and research it on WoW and EJ sites to see if I can improve it. I'm reliable, I know my flight schedule a month in advance, and bring a little well-timed humour in as well. I'm always on time or early for raids and come fully equipped with the potions and food necessary.

What I Need To Improve: My views of what to improve on have greatly changed since my initial application with Civ. The guild has certainly highlighted areas I can improve on and I take every bit seriously and try to have it improved for my next log-on. I can improve on gear knowledge and increasing my DPS.

The Hardest Lesson I Learned In WoW: WoW is an addictive game. The hardest lesson I learned in WoW was learning how to step away from it and enjoy a day without it.

My Role in Raiding: As a warlock I have several roles. DPS is of course my main role, but as a utility class I'm also responsible for HS, SS, and summoning. as a CC class, I'm responsible for banishing, enslaving, seducing and fearing. I also bring my culinary expertise to the table for buffs, and enchanting for the raid on request.

My Favorite Raid Bosses: I think the dance is up there with my favourites. Seeing everyone running across the room at the mercy of lava and timing is entertaining. The best part about it is you're completely in charge of your destiny. If you die you have nobody to blame but yourself :)

Just a couple general observations, you should put the old shoulder enchant on your shoulders since you are exalted with the Aldor while you work on your Sons of Hodir rep and being an enchanter probably put 63 spell power on your weapon and 30 spellpower on your bracers.

Can you be available Friday and Saturday nights for our ten man Ulduar runs? It's invaluable Ulduar experience and lots of potential upgrades, having some prior experience with the fights even on ten man will make it much easier to step into a bench role.

All great advice, I'll start work on the enchants right away.

Yes, Friday and Saturday nights are no issue for me at all. I'll make myself available for a potential spot.

Who do you know in Civilian! ;-P (/sarcasim)

What raid buffs do warlocks bring to the table?  Which of these buffs (debuffs) are shared with other classes and which are unique?

You're talent and armory link to Neckface could you please get this fixed?

     Sarcasm noted. Har har.

Warlocks, depending on build, bring the following buffs to a raid: Blood pact, Fel Intelligence, Improved Soul Leech, and Demonic Pact. Of these, Blood Pact shares with Commanding Shout, Fel Intelligence shares with Arcane Intellect and Divine Spirit, Improved Soul Leech shares with Hunting Party, Judgement of the Wise and Vampiric Touch, Demonic Pact shares with Flametongue Totem and Totem of Wrath.

With regards to debuffs, Warlocks provide: Curse of Weakness, Curse of Tongues, Curse of Elements, and Improved Shadowbolt. Curse of Weakness shares with Faerie Fire and Sting, Curse of Tongues shares with Lava Breath, Mind Numbing Poison and Slow, Curse of Elements shares with Earth and Moon and Ebon Plaguebringer, and Improved Shadowbolt shares with Improved Scorch and Winter's Chill.

In short, none of the warlock buffs are truly unique except quantitavely.

The link should be fixed above.  Give 'er a try and let me know if it's still broken.

    Your pal,

    Shim

    Hey Shimegi,

Got a few questions for you to start with.

    1. What is the hit cap? What talents/raid buffs are available to help reach this cap? Is your current hit rating above or below this amount?
    2. Please rank the following stats in order of benefit: spell power, hit, crit, haste, intellect, spirit
    3. What is the benefit gained from using Glyph of Immolate with your affliction spec? Is there another glyph that would be more beneficial?
    4. List your opening rotation and spell priorities for both affliction and destro specs.

I got a chance to chat with Neil a bit when he offered to run me through some lowbie instances.  He's a good guy, I give him a thumbs up.

     Hey Ruthless,

I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. The official hit cap for locks is 446. The talents that help me reach this cap are  supression and cataclysm. The raid buffs which help me are Misery from priests and Improved Faerie Fire from Balance Druids. With 3 points in supression my effective hit cap is 368 in a raiding environment, my PvE set falls short of that mark at 237. However I have a seperate raiding set where I'm at 364. It's being tweaked as we speak.

The following spells are listed in order of importance: Hit Rating, Spell Power, Haste, Spirit,Crit Rating, Intellect

Thank you for highlighting my glyphs to me. After researching it I've discovered I was not even close to having the right glyphs. I've replaced them now with Glyph of Life Tap and Glyph of Haunt. According to EJ those are far better in DPS.

My opening rotation for Afflic build is Haunt, Corruption, Curse of Agony, Unstable Affliction, Shadow Bolt filler (or Drain Soul @ <25% HP) rinse and repeat

Destro is completely new to me, I only dual specced it 2 days ago, but my potential rotation will be:  Immolate, Conflag, Chaos Bolt, Curse of Agony, Corruption, and Incinerate filler.

Thanks Aboms for the kind words. Ciao for now.

Thanks for the answers so far. Big Smile

I'd like for you to log out in the gear set up that you would use for raiding so we can take a look at that please.

Glad to see the glyph changes for your Aff build. I do have a couple things I would recommend with your rotation to help push out a little more DPS.

    • Don't forget about your Glyph of Life Tap. You want to start out with that to activate the buff. Most will just use a Rank 1 since any rank Life Tap will activate your glyph.
    • You also want to cast a Shadow Bolt prior to your Haunt. The purpose of this would be to have both stacks of Shadow Embrace up on the target prior to your DoTs starting to tick.

For your Destro rotation here are a few points to keep in mind as well.

    • With Molten Core now moved to the Demo tree CoA and Corr are not worth keeping in your rotation any more. Replace CoA with CoD and only use Corr when moving and you have no other instant cast to use.
    • There is often a slight lag between the finish cast of Immolate and being able to Conflag. The two most commonly used things are to open with either: Immo>CoD>Conflag>CB>Filler or with Immo>Incin>Conflag>CoD>CB>Filler. I prefer to use the second so that CoD can benefit from a possible Pyroclasm proc.
    • Again don't forget to activate your Life Tap glyph prior to starting your rotation.

We are often needed to spec Destro for Improved Soul Leech to provide Replenishment or into Demo to provide Demonic Pact and Improved Shadow Bolt.

Please provide a link with what your spec would look like if you were asked to provide either of these buffs. Be sure to fill in the options to show what Glyphs you would use for each spec as well.

Would your rotation change at all for Destro spec providing ISL from the rotation already discussed for your current Destro spec?

What rotation would you use if playing Demo?

     hey mr miyagi, /grin

Keep us posted of what you have been up to these last few days.

     Weapon /wrist upgraded chants

    Rep gains (hodir) 4350/12000

Also please explian your theory behind 2/3 iDS and 1/3 cataclysm > 3/3 fel concentration?

    Have you considered precision?

lastly what mods do you use to enhance game play?

Thanks and Gl on your app

    Damn!

2 posts behind, better get my rear in gear. You folks are relentless and ruthless. (yes, I meant that clever usage)

I've researched some destro builds which are raid friendly with buffs and found one I liked. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#IcZbG0h0hZVdhVrcuVsAf0t:zq0  Glyphs are included on the right. It seems to cover all the necessary DPS and buff requirements that come to mind.

As for demonology utilities, try this one on for size: http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?warlock=000000000000000000000000000000320330113520252013523135155000005000000000000000000# with glyph of Life Tap, Felguard and Immolate the choices for glyphs.

The question was posed whether my rotation for destro build would change providing ISL as opposed to not. As ISL is mainly a utility buff for the raid providing mana replenishment, my instinct tells me no, my rotation would remain the same.

If I were to spec demo for the raid, I refer to EJ for the rotation provided: Immolate CoD, Corr [2x iSB, 1x sf, 1x SB, 1x SF,  repeat]

    Thanks Ruthless

    Neuro,

Serves me right for getting stuck into Midsummer Festival. I've gotten carried away with the achievements and you totally caught me out. I'll be looking at those enchantments this evening. The Sons of Hodir grind is going as quickly as possible. I've been recommended to get the Aldor enchantment in the meantime and took that advice.

You want to hear my opinion on iDS and cataclysm over Fel concentration? I'm not a fan of Fel concentration personally. Reducing pushback on 'fire and forget' curses seems like a waste to me and besides half the spells benefiting from it are channeled spells. I prefer to stick it in aggro reduction and mana efficient talents. Here's where you tell me how wrong my view is ;)

No, I haven't considered precision but will look at it closely. To reach the magic 368 mark I've had to don some blues and was wondering if others had the same issues. I'll take advice on this from anyone offering. I get more benefit from a blue item with 50 hit and less SP than a purple item with no hit, more SP and a hit gem.

I use the following mods: Atlas and loot, Auctioneer, Bartender, DBM, DoTimers, DrainSoulTimer, Gatherer, Necrosis LdC, Omen, Quartz, Recount, TimerButtons, Titan, and X-Perl.

    Lots of love,

    Mr. Miyagi

    Hey Shimegi,

Just stopping in to check up on your app. I have a few questions regarding your gear.

    1. You are still Honored with Sons of Hodir. How is your progress going with that and what date do you expect to reach Exalted by?
    2. There is currently no enchant showing on your chest. Are you planning on +10 Stats or +15 Spirit? Why?
    3. Why did you chose +50 Spell Power/+30 Stamina over +50 Spell Power/+20 Spirit?
    4. Why did you chose the Meta gem you have over 21 Crit/+3% Crit damage?
    5. Even without the +3% hit raid buff you are currently showing 1.93% over hit cap. With the raid buff you are 4.93% over hit cap. Please explain why you are still using hit gems/talents.

Please take some time going through our Strategy forums and read up on the strategies for each boss in Ulduar. Be aware of what to expect on each fight prior to getting into raids. The Ulduar10 runs will be very beneficial to you for both gear and experience. This will be one of the most beneficial things for you right now.

i think a better question would be what are you going to do to neutralize the extra hit?

Thank you all for the attention and constructive comments on my gear. I really feel it's made me a better player.

I'm retracting my application for bench and would like very much to stay as a homie within the guild.  I've found that my line of work requires a very special kind of understanding partner that can cancel plans we have made together because of being called out short notice. It also means that I must keep other commitments down to a minimum to avoid disappointing others.

I'm very sorry for not being available last night for raiding. It was unavoidable and those interested in hearing me out can message me directly.
